Excitement building ahead of battery and electric vehicle conferences as agenda and speakers announced

• High-level speakers from Audi, Leclanché, NASA, CATL, Mercedes-Benz, Hyundai, and BAIC confirmed for 2019
• Topics set to explore the most pressing challenges within the battery and H/EV industry today
• Super early-bird rates now available for the three-day, three-track conference

(Stuttgart, Germany – Friday 7 December 2018) The fast-paced world of innovative battery solutions and electric and hybrid vehicles is abuzz with the latest announcements on the agenda and keynote speakers for two major European co-located industry events: The Battery Show Conference Europe and Electric & Hybrid Vehicle Technology Conference, taking place in Stuttgart, Germany – the epicentre of Europe’s automotive industry – on 7-9 May 2019.

These expert-led conferences address the most pressing and pervasive challenges within the battery and electric vehicle industries today. They mark a unique opportunity for anyone working in or connected to these industries to discover the very latest developments and hear from those at the vanguard of industry evolution.

Expert speakers from organisations including Audi, Leclanché, NASA Johnson Space Center, Mercedes-Benz, Airbus, and Williams Advanced Engineering are billed to share their insights at The Battery Show Europe Conference. At Electric and Hybrid Vehicle Technology Conference, speakers from Hyundai Motor Europe, the mobility and transport segment of the European Commission, BAIC Motor Company and TU Delft are among those confirmed to discuss hot industry topics, prominent pain points and significant current and predicted developments.

The conferences will continue to build on the most popular topics of 2018, from the short-term gains that can be achieved in battery performance and lifetime through the design and assembly, BMS and charging of battery packs to broad challenges in the supply chain for electric and hybrid vehicles. Electric & Hybrid Vehicle Technology Conference keeps delegates informed of advancements in this rapidly evolving industry – an objective it achieves by comparing recent developments in vehicles of this kind and discussing in detail the latest technologies and solutions intended to optimise H/EV vehicles, plus the impact these changes will have on different elements of the supply chain.

Topics in focus across the conference include market trends and growth opportunities; realising a European-based battery value chain; application trends; the fast-charging trade-off; extending battery life through battery management system innovation; future-proofing 12V, lead-acid, lithium and alternative technologies; the future of electric vehicles in the connected, autonomous world of Mobility as a Service (MaaS); pushing the limits of lithium-ion cell development; the current and future role of China in the EV market; powertrain efficiency; and hybrid powertrains for commercial vehicles.

The 2019 event will also see the return of the popular interactive platform Slido, plus a full day of conference workshops ahead of the main event on Monday 6 May. Workshop themes connected to electric vehicles include fast charging and XFC infrastructure evolution and impact, plus V2G technology, while themes related to battery developments include preventing thermal runaway in battery pack design, and reducing cost and improving speed to market through virtual battery design and simulation.

Awarness campaign on the safe use of button batteries

RECHARGE supports the awarness campaign launched by the European Portable Battery Association (EPBA) addressed to parents on the safe use of button batteries. EPBA developed an animated video  which gives parents all the necessary information on the safe use of button and coin cells. It also highlights the steps to be taken in case a child has swallowed such a battery.
Button and coin cells are batteries specially designed to power small appliances and portable devices such as toys, watches, or medical devices. Due to their small size, there is a risk that they are unintentionally swallowed by children. The industry is committed to reduce this risk, namely thanks to enhanced information about this topic.
The video and factsheet released focus on highlighting the context in which children might swallow a battery. It draws the attention to the particular case of coin cells which are 16 mm in diameter or larger and of Lithium based technology.

RECHARGE reaction to the EU Commission E-mobility package

A promising initiative from the Commission

RECHARGE welcomes the communication published yesterday by the European Commission “Europe on the move- Sustainable Mobility for Europe: safe, connected and clean”, and particularly its Annex II addressing the Strategic Action Plan on Batteries. The development of “an innovative, integrated, sustainable and competitive battery value chain in Europe” is recognized as a key objective for the future European economy and the transition to clean energy.

The underlined Commission actions are of high relevance for the industry:

  • Ensuring fair access to critical raw materials,
  • Facilitating stakeholders’ access to adequate financial support, from large R&I projects funding coordination, to leveraging and ‘de-risking’ private sector investment for large manufacturing projects, through IPCEI or the EIB,
  • Covering the full value chain and focusing on the existing Li-ion technologies and future solid-state technologies, with the preparation for the creation of a new European Technology and Innovation Platform and the launch of a large-scale Future Emerging Technologies Flagship research initiative,
  • Monitoring the coherence of different regulatory instruments (e.g. REACH, Waste Framework Directive, the Batteries Directive etc) to ensure the smooth functioning of the internal market for batteries, used batteries and materials obtained from recycled batteries. The identification of the key determining factors for the production, use / reuse and recycling of safe and sustainable batteries, is welcome,
  • Tackling market access distortions/barriers and unfair practices in third countries.

The Battery Industry Commitment

The Battery Industry is supporting the development of a sustainable Battery cell manufacturing sector in Europe, including the associated highly skilled workforce. RECHARGE represents its members in the Battery Alliance meetings and actively promotes the formulation of a comprehensive plan supporting the industry development. This Commission initiative creates a unique opportunity to tackle the issue of the European Battery manufacturing competitiveness. With the active engagement of its members, RECHARGE will actively contribute to the successful roll-out of this initiative.

EU, US hold ‘robust’ talks on possible airline laptop ban

Top US and EU officials traded intelligence Wednesday (17 May) on what they called “serious evolving threats” to airline security as Washington mulls banning carry-on computers on flights from Europe. Both sides said they intended to hold more talks next week in Washington on a possible ban of such equipment.“Both sides exchanged information on the serious evolving threats to aviation security and approaches to confronting such threats,” a joint statement said. They discussed “existing aviation security standards and detection capabilities” as well as security improvements “related to large electronic devices placed in checked baggage,” it added.

The US Department of Homeland Security sparked deep concern in Europe last week when it said it would soon decide on extending to European airlines a carry-on computer ban on flights from eight mostly Muslim countries.EU Home Affairs Commissioner Dimitris Avramopoulos and Transport Commissioner Violeta Bulc took part in what US officials said were four hours of “robust” talks with a US delegation led by Deputy Homeland Security Secretary Elaine Duke.

But a senior US government official told reporters on a conference call that there were points of agreement and points they were continuing to discuss.Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly was mulling “next steps” and would make any decision based on an evaluation of threats, the official said on condition of anonymity. “Secretary Kelly has made no decision on expanding the restriction on large electronic devices in aircraft cabins, but the decision is currently under consideration,” the senior official said.

A US ban on now ubiquitous laptops could cause havoc, with more than 3,250 flights a week scheduled to leave EU airports for the US this summer, according to industry data. Some experts also say there is a security risk in putting them with checked luggage given the danger of their batteries catching fire.
