RD&I for Sustainable Battery Power

On this page, RECHARGE presents the relevant bodies active in research, innovation and development (RI&D) in Europe and provides an overview of available EU funding mechanisms and open calls.

The relevant bodies for battery-related RI&D in Europe

Research, innovation and development for batteries in Europe is covered by different bodies in the European Union. DG RTD, DG MOVE, DG ENER, DG CNECT as well as DG CLIMA are actively involved in setting the strategic direction for RI&D in the battery value chain and providing funding and other services.

The political body for the development of large-scale manufacturing capacities (TRL 7-9)

The EBA’s Business Investment Plan (BIP) is a unique platform for key stakeholders along the entire battery value chain, connecting robust business cases with potential investors. Its network includes the European Commission, EU Member States, the European Investment Bank and over 250 industrial innovation and academic stakeholders, supporting the business cases with business development insights, guidance, market intelligence and access to potential investors.

The strategic research body of the European Commission (TRL 4-8)

By bridging between the different RI&D actions related to the battery industry and ensuring that relevant stakeholders have the possibility to discuss and agree upon common RI&D priorities, the EU-financed Technology and Innovation Platform (ETIP) BatteriesEurope defines the short- to medium-term RI&D roadmap for building an attractive European R&I ecosystem on batteries.

Launched under the scope of the European Battery Alliance, BatteriesEurope coordinates the efforts of both public and private partners involved in battery RI&D and mobilizes the resources to implement RI&D activities in the battery field.

Long-term research program of the brightest brains in Europe (TRL 1-3)

Battery 2030+ is an initiative of European research institutions and industry actors to develop the next generation of ultra-performing, sustainable and safe batteries.

It proposes a vision for inventing the batteries of the future and sets out the long-term research roadmap, including obstacles and required tools needed to overcome current operational limits in battery technologies and unlock their theoretical potential.

Complementary to the short-term approach of the BIP and the medium-term RI&D program of BatteriesEurope, Battery 2030+ has an operational horizon of +10 years and focuses on disruptive technologies of low TRL.

An executive body to prioritize and streamline RI&D calls in the battery industry

In December 2020, the Batteries European Partnership Association (BEPA) was created to bring the RI&D priorities of the industry to reality. As Observer Association to the Board, RECHARGE actively contributes to BEPA’s strategic direction.

BEPA will define the (multi-)annual RI&D agenda for the European battery value chain, lay out relevant technology roadmaps and make clear recommendations for research topics. As an operational-administrative body, BEPA serves as the interface between the strategic RI&D direction of the ETIP BatteriesEurope, the long-term RI&D vision and the needs of the battery value chain to establish a versatile, competitive and sustainable industry sector in Europe.
